The festival also honors family\, with many returning home to visit elders\, and includes Buddhist temple visits where water is poured on Buddha images and monks as a sign of respect. \nPi Mai (April 13-16) – Laos: Laos’ New Year starts with cleansing homes and temples. Young people pour water on elders’ hands for blessings\, giving the festival its nickname\, the Laos Water Festival. The celebration includes temple visits\, street food\, sand stupas along the Mekong\, parades\, music\, and dance. Every region has unique traditions\, with Luang Prabang and Vientiane hosting the most vibrant festivities. \nKhmer New Year (April 14-16) – Cambodia: Cambodia celebrates the solar New Year with a mix of tradition\, religion\, and fun. The three days focus on honoring ancestors\, giving thanks\, and helping the less fortunate. Festivities include food\, parties\, Buddhist ceremonies\, and street events like horse races\, fireworks\, and boxing in Phnom Penh. Each region and diaspora community adds its own unique spin.

SUMMARY:AJC ACCESS x NAAAP Mahjong Night
DESCRIPTION:Join NAAAP & AJC Access for Mahjong Night! Learn Chinese Mahjong from an instructor\, play a round\, or watch and connect with the community! \n\n\n\n\nNAAAP Atlanta is excited to partner with AJC ACCESS for a special evening celebrating culture\, community\, and connection through Mahjong. \nMahjong\, a tile-based game originating in China in the 1800s\, has since spread around the world. Known for its strategy\, social nature\, and beautiful tiles\, Mahjong has long been played in homes\, tea houses\, and community spaces as a way for people to gather\, converse\, and build relationships. \nIn the early 20th century\, the game was introduced to the U.S. and quickly gained popularity. By the 1930s and 1940s\, Mahjong had become especially popular within Jewish American communities. Playing Mahjong became a cherished social tradition\, bringing friends and neighbors together. \nDuring this event\, a Mahjong instructor will introduce attendees to the fundamentals of Chinese Mahjong. Beginners are warmly encouraged to attend—no prior experience is needed. Guests will have the option to join a table and learn to play or simply observe and enjoy the social atmosphere. \nCome learn something new\, meet other members of the community\, and enjoy a fun and culturally rich evening with NAAAP and ACCESS Atlanta. \nThis is a members only event\, please use your NAAAP email or AJC ACCESS access code to reveal hidden tickets \nEvent will take place in the Upper Westside of Atlanta. Exact address will be provided closer to the event. \nSnacks will be provided.
